The answer is that you have a better chance of winning the prize if you swap.
When you first pick a box, the chance that you pick the right one is one third.
The game show host removes one further box that he knows is an empty box. So the two remaining boxes must still contain the prize, so there is a two thirds chance that the other box holds the prize.
