A woman watches her husband chopping logs for the fire. She notices that he cuts the end off each log and discards it.

"Why do you do that?", she enquires.

"Well, I, well I guess it makes the logs burn better", came the uncertain reply.

"But surely the drier wood at the ends burns better?". He couldn't argue with that, he had never really thought about it

"Heck, I'm not sure, it's the way my Pa showed me".

That weekend, when his Pa was over for Sunday lunch, his wife asked about the logs.

"Never really thought about it, it's just the way my Pa, GrandPappy Duffy showed me when I was a kid".

So they called GrandPappy Duffy.

"I don't know why you folks chop the ends off your logs, but here Bert at the sawmill cuts the logs to two feet as standard and my grate's a bit smaller, so I have to chop the ends off".

"Why?" is probably the most powerful business analysis tool and it is entirely free.
